National Night Out

August 7, 2018
This year on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, Aberdeen's National Night Out will be held at Melgaard Park on Melgaard Road, Aberdeen, SD from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
National Night Out is an annual event held the first Tuesday in August in 15,000 communities worldwide. The National Night Out is a crime and drug prevention event. Now in its 30th year, National Night Out has proven to be an effective, inexpensive, and enjoyable program to promote community and police partnerships in our fight for a safer community and nation.

Event Goals

The National Night Out is designed to:
  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
  • Generate support and participation for local anti-crime programs
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police / community partnerships
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and are fighting back

Celebrate at Melgaard Park

Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, Aberdeen’s residents are invited to celebrate National Night Out at Melgaard Park. Many local and county agencies will be on hand with information on volunteering, social programs, safety, and crime prevention. There will also be games, food, and prizes.  A family movie will be shown at dusk.

Additional Suggested Activities

In addition to the Melgaard Park festivities, individual neighborhoods are encouraged to celebrate National Night Out with a variety of events and activities, including block parties, cookouts, contests, flashlight walks, parades, and more.
