1. How can I identify my belongings to prevent theft?

To identify your belongings:

• Engrave your initials or social security number on them, record serial number information, and take videotapes or photographs of the items.


• List your valuables by serial numbers and identifying features on an inventory sheet. This sheet should be kept separately, in a safe place, like a safe or safety deposit box.

2. How can I report a hate crime?

Hate crimes are very serious and traumatic incidents. When these crimes are occurring, they should be reported to the police immediately by calling 9-1-1. If you are the victim of a hate crime, but it is not life-threatening, please call the Aberdeen Police Department at (605) 626-7911.

3. How can I obtain a restraining order?

Paper work for a restraining order can be obtained at the courthouse, or through the assistance of a lawyer.

Please note: a restraining order does not allow an officer to arrest if violated.

4. How can I obtain a protection order?

Unlike a restraining order, a protection order gives an officer the ability to arrest violating subjects. A protection order is an order issued by a judge in cases of domestic violence. In order to obtain a protection order against an individual you must meet the following criteria:

• The individual you are filing the protection order against must pose a credible threat toward you


• The individual must be a family member, spouse or ex-spouse; be related by law; have lived with you; or have had a child with you


• The protection must be signed by a judge and served on the defendant before it becomes valid

5. What is a stalking protection order?

In order to obtain a stalking protection order, the victim must show that either they are being harassed by an individual or that they are being repeatedly followed. The victim must also be in fear of their life or bodily injury. A stalking protection order can also be obtained against a person that has previously assaulted the victim.

6. What can I do about annoying or threatening phone calls?

If you become a victim of annoying or threatening phone calls, please report them to the Aberdeen Police Department at (605) 626-7911. Your phone company may be able to assist in tracking the origin of the calls if they have a police report number.

7. How can I report child abuse?

8. What can I do about identity theft?
