Specialized Response Team
Special Response TeamA Joint Effort
In the early 1980s, the Aberdeen Police Department created a specialized detachment of officers to respond to high-risk incidents such as armed barricaded incidents, hostage situations, and high-risk warrant service.

The birth of Aberdeen’s specialized response team emulated a nationwide trend of law enforcement agencies to increase the operational capability and response to an ever-increasing culture of violence.

Currently the Aberdeen Police Department and the Brown County Sheriff's Office utilize a joint effort of resources and manpower. Our team’s mission and goal is to respond to critical incidents and safely diffuse these incidents without injury or loss of life.

Crisis & Tactical / Rifle Elements
Our team is comprised of two components - a crisis negotiator element and a tactical and rifle element. The crisis negotiation team includes four Aberdeen Police Department staff and a State of South Dakota parole agent. The tactical and rifle team includes fourteen members of the Aberdeen Police Department and one Brown County sheriff’s deputy.
