    ABERDEEN SNOW REMOVAL

The City of Aberdeen Public Works Department has developed the EMERGENCY SNOW ROUTE system.  A planned route of major roads kept clear of dangerous snow and ice ‑ a system designed to help you get through the winter more safely.  The map shows the outlined routes.

Aberdeen Snow Removal Map 1st day and 2nd day Snow Removal

WHEN EMERGENCY SNOW ROUTES ARE IN EFFECT:

When a heavy snowstorm or high winds are forecast or in evidence, the Public Works Commissioner (or designated representative) will declare a SNOW REMOVAL ALERT.  At that time, parking restrictions will go into effect.

The ARTERIAL EMERGENCY SNOW ROUTES, which would be included in the alert, do not need a declaration of a Snow Removal Alert prior to ticketing and towing.  The streets and avenues posted as NO PARKING ‑ SNOW ROUTE ‑ 3" SNOWFALL automatically prohibits parking when the snowfall has reached an accumulation of 3 inches.

The COMMERCIAL ZONE EMERGENCY SNOW ROUTE will be included in the SNOW REMOVAL ALERT and is normally done during night‑time operations.  Refer to the map on the reverse side for the Commercial Zone

OTHER STREETS AND AVENUES will be cleared according to Public Works policy as follows: all North-South Streets and connected cul‑de‑sacs, plus all of Forest Acres, Gorder Addition, Mel Ros Addition, Ashwood Heights, and all streets and avenues north of 15th Avenue North and all roads East of Roosevelt Street and South of 6th Avenue SE; beginning at 8:00 a.m. the first day of the snow removal schedule.

Remaining East‑West Avenues are to be cleared beginning at 8:00 a.m. on the second day.

    ABERDEEN SNOW REMOVAL

SNOW REMOVAL ALERT ANNOUNCEMENTS issued by the Public Works Department will be made on a MINIMUM OF 2 LOCAL RADIO STATIONS prior to start of operations.

Announcements for same‑day Alert will be made on a MINIMUM OF 2 LOCAL RADIO STATIONS after 6:00 a.m. and would follow City Ordinance as to time allowed for notice of the official start of operations.

Other electronic media and the Aberdeen American News will also be utilized to communicate the Snow Removal Alert if time permits.

Such announcements do not override the automatic 3 inch snowfall parking prohibition on the arterial emergency routes.

VEHICLES PARKED or ABANDONED on Aberdeen streets during snow removal operation are subject to being ticketed and the vehicle towed when possible.  It is the Public Works Department policy to have a Police Officer and tow truck working ahead of the snow removal equipment to ticket and tow vehicles parked in violation of the SNOW REMOVAL ALERT.  Vehicles that are ticketed are fined a minimum of $40.00, per ordinance in effect. The City tickets approximately 250 to 350 vehicles after a storm event which slows down cleaning operations.

DOWNTOWN PARKING LOTS are designated to be cleaned of snow the 2nd night of snow removal operations.  Signs prohibiting parking will be posted in the lots at least 12 hours prior to the loading and hauling of the snow.  Vehicles parked in the lots after cleanup starts will be ticketed and towed.  Vehicle(s) that are ticketed are fined a minimum of $40.00, per ordinance in effect.

Owners who need to locate their vehicles, which have been towed, may contact the Police Department at 626‑7000, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

    ****************************************************************************************************************

RULE OF THUMB: When the snowfall starts it's always a good idea to not park on posted Emergency Routes, or the north‑south streets, or the outlying additions: Forest Acres, Gorder Addition, Mel Ros Addition, Ashwood Heights and all streets and avenues north of 15th Avenue North and all roads East of Roosevelt Street and South of 6th Avenue SE; as those are the first to be done during snow removal operations.  Please don't guess, ask us.

    ****************************************************************************************************

MORE THAN ROADS MUST BE CLEARED.  Snow and ice on sidewalks adjoining your property must be removed within 24 hours of the snowfall end.  It is against City Ordinance to shovel or blow snow onto a plowed street or public property.  If your sidewalks are not cleared you may be subject to a fine of UP TO $100.

PROBLEMS, QUESTIONS, or REQUESTS may be directed to the Public Works Department at 626‑7010.  We will do our best to help.  Thank you.
