Interested in a career in law enforcement and want first hand experience?
Explorers is for young adults who are interested in learning about the duties of a police officer, and exploring on career opportunities.
Explorers assist with community events, participate in ride-alongs with officers, and attend twice monthly trainings. Trainings are held on the first and third Sundays of the month, and are 2 to 3 hours long.
The program has 5 main areas of focus:
- Career opportunities
- Leadership experience
- Life skills
- Social skills/citizenship
- Character development
Qualifications
To become an Explorer, applicants must:
- Fill out Explorer Application and email to Detective Jordan Lemke at 325.apd@aberdeen.sd.us
- Pass an interview, background check and probationary period
- Maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Be between the ages of 14 and 21.
- Adhere to policy manual for Explorers.
Weapons
Explorers do not carry weapons. Simulated weapons may be used under supervision during scenario based trainings.
