Youth Programs (Birth - 12th Grade)
Small Fry Story Time (Ages Birth-2yrs) - 9:30AM Thursdays - Jan. 13th - Mar. 31st
Join us for a program just for you and baby. Enjoy time together with other parents, caregivers and babies at the library. We will share songs, books, rhymes and more all planned with babies in mind. Small Fry Story Time is designed to help babies learn and develop listening, language and motor skills while having fun. Come prepared to sit on the floor one-on-one with your baby in your lap for this 20-minute program. No registration required.
Story Time (Ages 2-5yrs) – 10:00AM Tues/Wed – Jan. 11th - Mar. 30th
Story Time introduces your child to the incredible world of language and books through stories, songs, and activities. This program is designed to help prepare your child for successful school experiences using early literacy components and is a great opportunity for your child to develop social skills and make friends. Story time generally lasts 30 minutes and no registration required. Topics and themes change weekly. Tuesday and Wednesday story times are the same each week.
Jan. 10th – Pull String Art Painting – 4:00-4:45PM – We are going to create some fun paintings while using only paint and string! No registration required.
Jan. 24th – Veterinarian Visit – 4:00-4:45PM – Come listen to Veterinarian Robin O’Neill from Animal Care Clinic. She will go over how to approach animals safely, how to take care of animals and more fun things. For allergy awareness, there will be a cat and dog here during the program. No registration required, but space is limited.
Feb. 7th – Miniature Pasta Plants – 4:00-4:45PM – Come make an easy plant that you don’t have to water and take care of at home! No registration required.
Mar. 7th – Sand Art – 4:00-4:45PM – Do you like playing with sand? Here is your chance to make sand art in a bottle to take home with you. No registration required.
Mar. 21st – Take & Make Kits – Germs – Create your own germ creation! There will be kits available for pick up at the library in the Children’s Room at 4:00PM, we have a limited number of kits and will be a first come first served.
NEW! LEGO Club (K-2nd Grades)
Will meet on Mondays from 4:00-5:00PM on the following dates: Jan. 31st, Feb. 14th & 28th, and Mar. 14th & 28th.
If you like to build things and want to meet new friends, then this is the club for you! There will be different challenges provided each week that they will work on sometimes as a group or individually. The last 15 minutes of each session the kids will present what they have built and caregivers are welcome to come and take pictures at that time if they like. No registration required.
Jan. 18 – Take and Make Kits – 3D Coloring Puzzles – Kids can cultivate their creativity with these fun 3D puzzles they will color and build themselves. Kits available at 4 p.m. at the Children’s Desk on a first come first serve basis.
Feb. 1 – Tin Can Snowman – 4:00-5:00 p.m. – What do you do with empty soup cans? Turn them into unique snowmen, of course! No registration required.
Feb. 15 – Take and Make Kits - String Art Heart Light – Big fun in a mini craft kit! Explore string art as you craft your own light-up heart lantern. Kits available at 4 p.m. at the Children’s Desk on a first come first serve basis.
Feb. 22 – Registration Begins Today! The Magician’s Nephew Book Celebration – Eat, play, and chat! Register online for this fun event. Books will be loaned to participants from the library. You will have a month to read the book before returning to the library to participate in activities related to the story on Tuesday, March 22nd at 4:00 pm. Each participant will taste test a soldier’s meal with your own MRE (Meal, Ready- to-Eat), chat about the book, then play games soldiers played in the trenches and receive a special gift at the celebration. Maximum of twelve participants.
Mar. 1 – Edible Sand Art – 4:00-5:00 p.m. – Give the gift of sand you can eat! Fill a mason jar with dry brownie ingredients then decorate the jar. Play a game challenging your knowledge of brownie ingredients plus taste test the recipe with a warm brownie fresh from the oven. No Registration Required.
Mar. 22 – The Magician’s Nephew Book Celebration – 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. – Eat, play, and chat! Taste test a soldier’s meal with your own MRE (Meal, Ready- to-Eat), chat about the book, then play games soldiers played in the trenches. Take home either the book or movie of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, which is the next title in the series The Chronicles of Narnia. Participants must have previously registered for this event.
April 12 – Easter Eggstravaganza – 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. – Experiment with a variety of Easter egg dying methods, play a guessing game, and construct a pig, bunny, puppy, kitten, or mouse from an egg. No registration required.
NEW – Tween-Girls Who Code
Meets Tuesdays from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. on the following dates: Jan. 11, Jan. 25, Feb. 8, Feb. 22, Mar. 8, Mar. 29, April 5, April 19, and May 3.
Use computer science and learn the language of the age! Coding is the process of giving computers instructions in a language they understand. Coding teaches important skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity. At this club you will learn coding by reading excerpts about it, practice new skills by completing online tutorials, and build community with the rest of the club. Online registration required. Jan. 20 – Take and Make Kits – Hat Weaving Kit – Keep yourself warm this winter with your own handcrafted hat! Kits available at 4 p.m. at the Children’s Desk on a first come first serve basis.
Feb. 3 – Virtual Reality Explorations – 4:00-4:45 p.m. – Discover the world of virtual reality using Smartphone Headsets. Ride a roller coaster, walk in space, fly through human cells as they regenerate, and other adventures. Participant provides phone.
Feb. 17 – Comic Book Clock – 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. – Take time in your hands! Customize your very own comic book clock using mod podge and comic book illustrations. No registration required.
Mar. 3 – Take and Make Kits – Thread Bowls Kit – This craft will bowl you over! Receive two bowls and a variety of thread to create the perfect container for holding earrings, rings or necklaces. Kits available at 4 p.m. at the Children’s Desk on a first come first serve basis.
April 28 – Minecraft Creative Build Time Challenge – 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. – Show off your Minecraft skills. Race against time to finish the challenge. You’ll have one hour to work on your creation then peers will vote to see whose construction is the most innovative and unique. Prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place designers. Participants will be using the basic, Classic Minecraft (free version). Library laptops available on a first come, first served basis. Teens are welcome to bring their own devices.
Mar. 17-18 – LIVE Clue – One murder… 6 suspects. Someone killed Mr. Boddy of Tudor Mansion. Was it Mr. Green in the drawing room with a lead pipe or Mrs. White in the library with a candlestick? Use your sleuthing skills to eliminate suspects and gain evidence as you become one of the game’s characters and navigate a life-size board game. The player who correctly deciphers Who, What, and Where wins! Groups of 3 to 6. Registration required. Go to the KO Lee Aberdeen Public Library website and click on the link beginning February 28.
