The therapy dog sits calmly beside the reading child and listens patiently to a story. The children choose the books they want to read to the dog. According to studies cited in Public Libraries magazine, children who consistently practice reading to therapy dogs improve their reading fluency by 12 percent, including “the ability to explain, describe, analyze, and infer.” This program offers a unique opportunity for budding or struggling readers to transform into confident kids.
